On Dec. 10, 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Two years later, Human Rights day was coined, officially celebrating the Declaration’s anniversary. At FORA, our educational materials fuel the Declaration’s intention each day through literacy.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights established a broad scope of universal human rights and freedoms entitled to all people. Some of these rights include equal protection under the law, the right to peaceful assembly and the right to education.

Despite the existence of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the equity it promotes, it remains a non law binding document, meaning it’s not legally enforced. People around the world still struggle to obtain the basic human rights the declaration outlines.

Be the reason another child catches up to grade level

and finds meaning in and beyond the classroom.

In many countries, education is majorly inaccessible, preventing children from their right to education. As a result, many refugees arrive in Chicago with limited or no formal education, and struggle within the American educational system because of it.

FORA opens its doors to refugee students with limited or no formal education, providing students with individualized High Impact Tutoring to help restore their access to quality education. In doing so, FORA aims to prepare students for successful futures in the U.S. No matter what their goals entail, students deserve to walk into their futures with their heads held high and their best foot forward.

"No matter what their goals entail, students deserve to walk into their futures with their heads held high and their best foot forward."

Human Rights Day 2025 is a powerful testament of “Our Everyday Essentials”, a campaign  highlighting the importance of incorporating human rights into daily culture. According to the campaign, human rights are “positive, essential and attainable.”

FORA’s mission utilizes all of these three principles everyday. FORA fosters a positive community which encourages high quality work from students and staff alike. Providing essential education for over 115 students five days a week, FORA operates within the community they serve, ensuring maximum accessibility and attainability

Although the world celebrates Human Rights Day today, its message must remain at the forefront of daily life. Human rights are upheld through action. Join FORA now and invest in the power of education and equity.
