Q & A with Michael and Kathleen O’Connor: Six Flags

FORA founders Michael and Kathleen O’Connor promised that if progress was seen in the overall average for standardized tests, each student would receive the opportunity to go to Six Flags. The students miraculously completed this goal and are thrilled about their upcoming field trip to Six Flags. Therefore, I sat down with the O’Connors to discuss how this idea came about and their feelings about this impressive achievement. This interview was edited for length, clarity, and grammar.

How did the idea of going to Six Flags come about?

Michael

“The kids deserve some happiness. They asked for this, and they have been so good. Therefore, it was an easy thing to do. They try very hard. It shows on their tests and grades, but more importantly, when they show up, treat [FORA] as a scholarly place, and they really engage.”

Kathleen

“These kids have been working so hard, and the old building was cramped. Michael and I underestimated the growth in the new building. Stress in the world and kids deserve something special; these kids have never had a chance to do something like this.”

How do you think the kids feel about their progress?

Michael

“They believe hard work will get them someplace. They want to be a part of a community and use their talents to better the world. They know what it means to feel empowered and motivated to change the world.”

Kathleen

“The kids are thrilled. They are so excited to go with their tutors and friends from FORA.

What do you think about the community between the students?

Michael

“The children have come to believe this is their space. In fact, it is their space for our refugee neighbors. Physically, [FORA] is in the center of the community; therefore, it's easier for them to believe they are a part of a community. They can all invest and come together.”

Is there anything else you would like to share?

Kathleen

“We are so proud of these kids and delighted we get a chance to show them how proud we are.”

Michael

“All kids deserve a place like FORA to come. I’m glad we can take them to Six Flags.”
