Team Spotlight: Maya

By Nicole Ring, Intern

“One of my favorite memories is when telling time just "clicked" for my student and she decided that we were only going to do the time telling activities "all week" until we finished all of them. She was so excited to show me what she figured out and how good she was at it now, and seeing that confidence and how happy she was to be doing math makes it one of my favorite memories from tutoring.”

Maya is an 11th grader living in sunny San Diego, California. She began tutoring with FORA at the beginning of the summer of 2020- in the midst of a global pandemic. Maya’s determination to find meaningful volunteer work despite the unique circumstances led her to FORA. At our organization she has been able to make a measurable impact in the lives of FORA’s students with her academic skills. Maya particularly enjoys how involved FORA is with our students and the focus on learning which is so vital now that kids don’t have the same level of face to face interactions with their teachers and peers.

The confidence that grows when students are given the chance to work with someone who truly cares about their development is plain to see. Maya has personally noticed the growth these kids go through in such a short amount of time, the ability to express themselves with English skills and her impact in their Math knowledge is the most impactful for her. Outside of FORA, Maya enjoys her time with her friends, boba, art, and playing competitive soccer. She also takes the time to coach kids with disabilities in soccer and volunteers at her local food bank. FORA is grateful to have a compassionate and driven tutor like her on the team.
